Chapter 6- Electrolysis Flashcards
(9 cards)
Acronym for positive and negative electrodes
A- anode
Person - positive
Can - cathode
Nod - negative
Where do metal ions moved? Are they positive or negative?gain or lose electrons?
They are positive
Move to the cathode ( negative)
Also gain an electron
Where do non- metals move?are they positive or negative?gain or lose?
They are negative
Move to the anode which is positive
The lose electrons (are oxidised)
What is the electrolyte? Why
The electrolyte is a solution, must be a liquid
- to allow the ions to move to the electrodes
Equipment needed for electrolysis
Electrolyte
Electrodes
Wires so electrons can flow
Beaker
What forms at the anode?
Gas
What forms at the cathode?
Metal
How is the experiment different in the extraction of aluminium?
Negative electrode is around the side
What is an aqueous solution ?
Metal salt dissolved in h20
