Chapter 5 Flashcards

1
Q

function of the heart

A
  • transport of gases (oxygen, carbon dioxide)
-transpiration of fuel ( glucose and triglycerides)
  • thermoregulation (manage body temp)

3
Q

increased hr

A

the amount of times your heart beats per minute (bpm)
- our hr increases during exercise as our heart needs to beat faster in order to supply more oxygen to the working muscles

Q

increased stroke volume

A

how much blood your left ventricle pumps out each contraction (measured in ml)
- heart needs to squeeze out more blood each beat in order to supply more blood and oxygen to the working muscles

Q

thermoregulation (+hyper and hypothermia)

A
  • keeping homeostasis
hyper- body gains more heat than it loses
hypo- when core body temp falls below min temp required

Q

redistribution of blood (constriction and dilation)

A
  • blood flow is redirected away from organs and inactive muscles to ensure working muscles receive the greatest % of cardiac output
  • vasoconstriction - arterioles constrict to stop blood flow to areas
  • vasodilation- arterioles dilate to allow blood flow into areas
  • increased bf to assist temp reg
  • decreased blood flow to the skin if at max intensity
