Keratinocytes
- Produce Keratin – fibrous protein that gives
protective properties - Most epidermal cells are keratinocytes
Layers of the Epidermis
Stratum Basale
Stratum Spinosum
Stratum Granulosum - Process of keratinization begins
Stratum Lucidum (Clear Layer) - only in thick skin
Stratum Corneum
Two layers of Dermis
- Papillary - Areolar connective tissue
- Reticular - Dense irregular connective tissue
Three pigments contribute to skin color
Melanin, Carotene, Hemoglobin
Clinical – Skin Conditions
– Erythema: indicate embarrassment, fever, inflammation or allergy
– Pallor: emotional stress, low blood pressure and
decreased ability of blood to carry oxygen
– Ecchymosis: blood vessel damage and blood leaking into surrounding tissue
Sweat Glands: two main types + one other cutaneous gland
Eccrine (merocrine) - temp control
Apocrine - may act as sexual scent glands
Sebaceous gland (oil) - lube skin & hair
The three major forms of skin cancer are
basal cell carcinoma - most common
squamous cell carcinoma - 2nd most common
melanoma - rare & deadly
Burns
The immediate threat is dehydration and electrolyte
imbalance
To evaluate burns, the Rule of Nines is used
Body is broken into 11 sections, with each
section representing 9% of body surface
* except genitals, which account for 1%
each arm 9%, each leg 18%, ant/pos trunk 36%, head + neck 9%
