Chapter 5 Flashcards
Implicit leadership theory
It’s the cognitive models of leadership that individuals have developed over time. As they ar different between people the same leadership behaviour is interpreted differently and what is considered good/bad/effective is different.
360-degree leader assessment
By this feedback the leader is able to get an understanding of the implicit leadership theories of superiors, colleagues and subordinates.
Social identity theory
Social identity is a person’s sense of who they are based on their group memberships. Each group has a typical behaviour, attitude and identity, which is used to differentiate from others and influences the perception of what effective leadership is.
The prototypical leader
Followers think positively about leaders that shares and creates a common identity with the group. Leaders from the outside has a harder time being accepted and effective. Leaders should focus on understanding the identity.
Limitations of social identity theory
It’s complex as social identity, individual leadership theories and other social groups all influence a person’s view of effective leadership.
The specific context
This is the interaction of three separate contextual levels; immediate, cultural, institutional.
Social construction of leadership
Leadership is a social construction; the product of all interaction of individuals and their contexts and is therefor subjective and changing.
