Chapter 5: Anatomic Terms Flashcards
(37 cards)
What is the midline?
An imaginary line drawn down the center of the body, dividing it into right and left halves.
The midline serves as a reference point for anatomical directions.
Define medial.
Toward the midline of the body.
Medial indicates a position closer to the center of the body.
What does lateral mean?
To the side, away from the midline of the body.
Lateral is used to describe structures that are further from the midline.
What is bilateral?
On both sides.
Bilateral structures have counterparts on both the left and right sides of the body.
What does unilateral mean?
Limited to one side.
Unilateral refers to conditions or structures that affect only one side of the body.
Define midaxillary line.
A line drawn vertically from the middle of the armpit to the ankle.
The midaxillary line is often used in anatomical studies and clinical evaluations.
What is meant by anterior?
The front of the body or body part.
Anterior is often used to describe the position of structures in relation to each other.
Define posterior.
The back of the body or body part.
Posterior can refer to the backside of an organ or structure.
What does ventral refer to?
Referring to the front of the body; a synonym for anterior.
Ventral is commonly used in anatomical terminology to describe the front surface.
What is dorsal?
Referring to the back of the body or the back of the hand or foot; a synonym for posterior.
Dorsal is used to describe structures located on the back side.
Define superior.
Toward the head (e.g., the chest is superior to the abdomen).
Superior is used to indicate a position higher than another structure.
What does inferior mean?
Away from the head, usually compared with another structure that is closer to the head (e.g., the lips are inferior to the nose).
Inferior indicates a position lower than another structure.
Define proximal.
Closer to the torso.
Proximal is used to describe positions of limbs in relation to the trunk.
What does distal mean?
Farther away from the torso.
Distal refers to points on the limbs that are further from the center of the body.
What is the torso?
The trunk of the body, or the body without the head and the extremities.
The torso includes the chest and abdomen but excludes the limbs and head.
What does the term ‘palmar’ refer to?
The palm of the hand
‘Palmar’ is used in anatomical terms to describe locations on the hand.
What does the term ‘plantar’ refer to?
The sole of the foot
‘Plantar’ is an anatomical term used to describe locations on the foot.
What is the midclavicular line?
The line through the center of each clavicle
It divides the chest into regions and is used in clinical assessments.
What are the four abdominal quadrants?
Right upper quadrant (RUQ), left upper quadrant (LUQ), right lower quadrant (RLQ), left lower quadrant (LLQ)
These quadrants help locate pain or injury in the abdomen.
What is the term for lying on the back?
supine
This position is often used in medical examinations and treatments.
What does prone mean?
lying facedown
This position can be used in various medical and therapeutic contexts.
What is the recovery position also known as?
lateral recumbent position
This position is crucial for unconscious individuals to maintain an open airway.
Describe the Fowler position.
a sitting position
This position is often used for patients who have difficulty breathing.
Which quadrant is the liver in?
RUQ & LUQ
