Chapter 5: The Skeletal System Flashcards
Appendicular Skeleton
Bones of the limbs and limb girdles that are attached to the axial skeleton
Amphiarthoses
A slightly movable joint
Articular Cartilage
Smooth, white tissue that covers the ends of bones where they come together to form joints
Articulations
A joint made of CT and cartilage
Axial Skeleton
The skull, vertebral column, ribs, and sternum
Bony Thorax
Bones of the thorax , including ribs , sternum, and thoracic vertebrae
Cartilaginous Joint
Bones united by cartilage
Compact Bone
Make up 80% of the body , dense bone, hard
Diaphysis
Elongated shaft of a long bone
Pelvic Girdle
Incomplete bony basin formed by the two coral bones and the sacrum
Periosteum
Double layered CT membrane that covers and nourishes the bone
Red Marrow
Mainly found in flat bones , forms red blood cells
Short Bones
Shaped like cubes, contain mostly spongy bone
Shoulder Girdle
Composite of two bones, scapula and clavicle, attach the upper limb to the axial skeleton
Skull
Bony enclosure for the brain
Diarthrosis
A freely movable joint
Epiphyseal Plate
An area at the long bone that contains growing bone
Epiphysis
The end of the long bone
Fibrous joint
Bones joined by fibrous tissue
Flat Bone
Flat, made up of a layer of spongy bone between two thin layers of compact bone
Irregular bone
Any bone that’s not long, flat, or short, such as spine
Intervertebral Disks
The disc of fibrocartilage between the vertebrae
Ligaments
A cord of fibrous tissue that connects bones
Long bones
Ex. Femur, humerus, tibia, phalanges
