Chapter 5 (Vo2/Max/EPOC) Flashcards

(6 cards)

1
Q

Oxygen Uptake (Vo2)

A

Definition: The amount of oxygen your body uses during activity.

Increases with exercise.

Measured in L/min or mL/kg/min.
Example: Jogging uses more oxygen than sitting.

Q

Maximum oxygen Uptake (Vo2 Max)

A

Definition: The maximum amount of oxygen your body can use during intense exercise.

A measure of aerobic fitness.

Higher VO₂ max = better endurance.
Units: mL/kg/min

Example: Elite athletes like marathon runners have high VO₂ max.

Q

Oxygen Deficit

A

Definition: When your body needs more oxygen than it can supply at the start of exercise.

Happens before reaching steady state.

Example: You feel puffed in the first few minutes of a run.

Q

Steady State

A

Definition: When oxygen supply = oxygen demand during submaximal exercise.

Breathing and heart rate level out.

Example: After a few minutes of running at a constant pace.

Q

EPOC (Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption)

A

Definition: The extra oxygen your body uses after exercise to return to rest.

You’re still breathing hard after you stop.

Used to restore PC, remove lactate, lower temp, etc.

Q
  1. Factors Affecting VO₂ Max & EPOC
A

Factors include:
Fitness Levels
Age
Gender
Body size
intensity/Duration

Effects are:
Fitter = higher VO₂ max, faster EPOC recovery

VO₂ max decreases with age

Males generally have higher VO₂ max
