Chapter 6 Flashcards
(30 cards)
Dental plaque biofilm-induced gingivitis
inflammation of the gingival tissue that is caused by the presence of dental plaque biofilm
Foreign body reaction
reaction caused by an object or substance found in the body in an organ or tissue in which it does not belong
Gingival diseases modified by malnutrition
diseases of the gingiva that are intensified by vitamin deficiencies such as vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, and C
Gingival diseases modified by medications
diseases of the gingiva that are intensified by use of medications
Gingival diseases modified by systemic factors
diseases of the gingiva that are intensified by conditions such as endocrine changes or the presence of corticosteroids
Gingival diseases of fungal origin
diseases of the gingiva that are associated with fungal organisms, most commonly Candida albicans
Gingival diseases of specific bacterial origin
diseases of the gingiva that result from common bacterial infections in the mouth, such as streptococcal infection of the throat and oral tissues
Diseases of viral origin
diseases of the gingiva that result from viral infection, such as secondary herpetic infections and the various types of herpes viruses
Gingival fluid flow
pattern of movement of gingival fluid
Gingival manifestations of systemic conditions
changes in the gingiva that are caused by systemic conditions, such as those related to mucocutaneous disorders, dermatologic diseases, or blood dyscrasias
Gingivectomy
surgical excision of unsupported gingival tissue to level where it is attached, creating a new gingival margin apical in the position to the old
Gingivitis
inflammation of the gingival tissues
Gingivitis associated with dental plaque biofilm only
most common form of gingivitis; directly related to the presence of bacterial plaque biofilm on the tooth surface; also called plaque associated gingivitis or gingivitis
Hyperplasia
abnormal multiplication or increase in the number of normal cells in normal arrangement in a tissue or organ, resulting in a thickening or enlargement of the tissue or organ
Nonplaque biofilm-induced gingival lesions
lesion that originate from a source other than plaque biofilm on the gingivae
Pregnancy tumor
specific type of gingival lesion that is actually not a tumor but a localized are of pyogenic granulation tissue, aggravated by hormonal changes during pregnancy
Recession
location of the margin of the tissue
Stage I gingivitis
initial state of gingivitis; occurs in the first few days of contact between microbial plaque biofilm and the gingival tissues; acute inflammatory response
Stage II gingivitis
lesions begin to form 4 to 7 days after plaque has accumulated in the gingival sulcus
Stage III gingivitis
characterized by the gingival inflammation reaching an established stage (after 15 to 21 days)
Stave IV gingivitis
advanced stage of gingivitis in which the inflammatory processes have extended beyond the gingiva and into the other periodontal tissues
Traumatic lesions
lesion pertaining to or caused by an injury
