What are the ways in which words are related in terms of meaning?

What are synonyms?
Words that can mean the same thing
In what ways do synonyms differ?
- Used in different dialects
- Used in different styles
- Used in different combinations
- Meaning of two words may overlap but each has its own area as well (e.g. freedom and liberty)
What are antonyms?
Words which are the opposite ends if some scale
What are the types of antonyms?
Gradable and incompatibles.
What are incompatibles?
Things that cannot be two things at once (husband and wife)
What are hyponyms?
A word with a specific meaning that’s included in the meaning of a more general word (lion, tiger, bear)
What are co-hyponyms?
Words that share a superordinate
What are superordinates?
Words with general meaning that includes specific words (e.g. animal, musical instrument)
What are polysemous words?
Words that have more than one meaning/a word that has multiple meanings (e.g. right, bank)
What are collocations?
The combinations of words that are commonly used together and sound natural to native speakers.
