What are homophones?
Words with the same pronunciation but different spelling and meaning
What are homographs?
Words with the same spelling but have different meanings
What are homonyms?
Words that are both homophones and homographs (spelled and pronounced the same but have different meanings)
What are onomatopoeic words?
Words whose sounds represent their meaning.
Why do we have different sound representations of the same sounds?
Because every language has its own unique sound system and therefore sound gets filtered through a language’s sound system.
Example on onomatopoeia.
Kikiriki in german is cockadoodledo in english and كوكوكو in arabic
What are phonaesthemes?
Words that have two or more letters that usually have a sound denoting a particular meaning
Examples on phonaesthemes?
Sl- fast, movement
Gl- light, sight
Fr- easily broken
In arabic 3ein (something high) & gn (hidden)
What are morphophonemics?
The interaction between phonological and morphological process
Examples on morphophonemics.
Impossible instead of inpossible إدغام
Regular verb and plural noun endings

Hissing sounds such as s and sh
