Chapter 6 - Unit 2 Flashcards
(13 cards)
Accessory Organs
Organ that helps with the function but food does not pass through it (ex. Liver, gallbladder, pancreas)
Mechanical Digestion
Physically breaking down food in your mouth or churning it in your stomach for the purpose of creating surface area for enzymes to work
Chemical Digestion
Using enzymes and amino acids to break down food into its chemical components (proteins - amino acids), this occurs in the mouth, stomach, and small intestine, for the purpose of bringing nutrients into the bloodstream
Amylaze
An enzyme that breaks down carbohydrates, and is made in the salivary glands and pancreas
Bolus
Partially digested food that is a mixture of chewed food, and saliva
Peristalsis
Muscle that pushes food through your digestive system, and brings bolus to the stomach
Epiglottis
Make sure food does not go back to the airway
Gastric Juices
Created by secretary cells that line the stomach, and they are released by the hormone gastrin - turns bolus into chyme
Chyme
Thick mixture of partially digested food and gastric juices, chyme is then released into your small intestine through the pyloric sphincter
Pepsinogen
Generates pepsin and comes from the stomach lining
Pepsin
Forms when pepsinogen comes in contact with stomach acid, the enzyme then breaks down proteins into peptides/amino acids
Alimentary Canal
Another word for the digestive system (G.I tract)
