Conversation
A joint activity in which two or more people use language and non verbal signals to communicate interactively
One-way conversations
The speaker monopolizes conversation and receiver is a passive participant provides nonverbal feedback
Two-way conversations
Both partners are mutually involved, actively talking, providing nonverbal feedback and listening
Cooperative conversations
Partners are mutually interested in the contributions of all
Competitive conversations
Partners are more concerned with their points of view than others
Dialogue
Participants to exchange information and build relationships with each other
Discourse
Sender transmits information to the receiver
Debate
Win an argument or persuade someone to change their thoughts, values, beliefs, and behaviors
Diatribe
Express emotions, browbeat those that disagree, and/or inspire others with the same perspective
Self disclosure
The act of verbally or non verbally revealing information about oneself to other people. Reduces the level of uncertainty
Persona
A face or front an individual puts on in social situations
Façade
A false appearance hiding what someone is truly like
Self- descriptions
Talking about oneself in the way we want others to see us
Accounts
Explaining oneself in a way designed to minimize or justify the perceived severity of an undesirable situation
Apologies
Admitting that one has done something wrong while attempting to downplay the severity of the incident
Entitlements
Designed to maximize an individual’s apparent responsibility for an event
Enhancement
Designed to maximize the favorability of an event itself
Flattery
The use of compliments to persuade another individual to like someone more
Favors
Doing something nice for someone to gain that persons approval
Social penetration theory
Explains how individuals gradually become more intimate as individuals self disclose more and those self disclosures become more intimate
Hearing
A passive physiological process
The perception of sound by detecting vibrations through the ear
Listening
A complex psychological process
The process of physically hearing, interpreting that sound and understanding the significance of it
Critical listening
Careful, systematic thinking and reasoning
Used to determine if a message makes sense in light of the factual evidence
Discriminative listening
Distinguishing between stimuli to determine what you should pay attention to
