Chapter 7 Flashcards
(16 cards)
Describe the role of hemoglobin in the transport of oxygen and carbon dioxide.
Hemoglobin carries oxygen from the lungs to the tissues only when a tissue show a significant oxygen concentration. Then hemoglobin carries carbon dioxide back to the lungs, where it is eliminated through respiration.
Describe the functions of blood
Transportation of all substances needed in the body.
Regulates temperature, water volume and pH.
Define hematocrit and explain why it is important
Hematocrit is the percentage of whole blood that consist of red blood cells. It’s important because it’s a relative measure of the oxygen carrying capacity of the blood.
Which of the following makes up the greatest volume of whole blood?
Plasma
Jason has just spent four weeks and Rocky Mountain national Park, studying plants that grow above 10,000 feet elevation. which of the following would be a likely change in his blood because of the time spent at high elevation?
Increased number of red blood cells
Which property do red blood cells and platelets have in common?
Both lack nucleus.
A person has been feeling low on energy and is easily fatigued
Anemia
Plasma proteins do all the following except
Synthesize hormones
A person With kidney failure may become anemic due to deficient production of
Erythropoietin
What do red blood cells transport
Mostly oxygen and some carbon dioxide
Stem cells are located in ______ and give rise to _____
Red marrow
All formed elements
The form elements of the blood include all of the following except
Proteins
Anti-bodies are
Gamma globulins
A person who is ill has a blood test run that demonstrates
A parasitic infection
Which of the following blood components protects the individual from a variety
White blood cells
Which of the following makes up the greatest volume of whole blood
Plasma
