All original peoples in North America & their descendants
First Nations

People of Indigenous & mixed European ancestry with a distinct cultural heritage

Much worse health outcomes for Indigenous peoples in Canada with some variations across Indigenous status & geographic region
Structural Inequalities
Remain despite efforts to improve Aboriginal health & other aspects of life
Social Determinants of Indigenous Health
- Income- often occupy lower paid positions, high rates of unemployment
- Employment & working Conditions- lack of meaningful employment on reserve or access to good jobs
- Food security- very expensive in rural & remote areas
- Environment & housing- reserve housing can be sub-par
- Early childhood development- poverty, lack of access to educational & support services
Type 2 Diabees
- FN women are 4 times more likely to have and Type 2 and FN men are 2.5 times more likely
- Epidemic
Indian Act
Set out certain federal government obligations and regulates the management of Indian reserves lands, money, and other resources
Truth and Reconciliation Commission
Establishment in 2005 to reveal the truth and document the individual and collective harms perpetrated again Aboriginal peoples by church run residential schools, and to guide a process leading toward reconciliation with Aboriginal families and between Aboriginal peoples and non Aboriginal communities
Infant mortality
Refers to the number of infants who die in the first year after birth per 1000 births
Royal commission on Aboriginal people
Created by the Canadian government in 1991 to address economic, social, and political issues related to First Nations, Metis, Inuit peoples in Canada. The commissioners held 178 days of public hearings and visited 96 communities
Unemployment rate
Estimates the proportion of people who are not employed but who are actively looking for work
