Chapter 7 Solutions Flashcards
(23 cards)
Colloid
A mixture of really tiny particles that are suspended in a state of matter.
Emulsion
Two or more Immiscible liquids in any mixture in which one liquid is dispersed in the other one.
Solution
A homogenous mixture when two or more substance disperse through a single phase
Solute
The substance that dissolves in the solvent in the solution
Solvent
The substance that the solute dissolves in a solution
Alloy
Two or more metals in a solid or liquid mixture
Heterogenous mixture
A mixture when you can pick out the things
Decanting
Pouring a lighter liquid off a heavier liquid
Immiscible
Do not mix
Tyndall effect
Scattering of light
Polar compound
An uneven distribution of electrons in a molecule
Hydrogen bonding
The bonding to a highly electronegative atom in an inter molecule force occurring in a hydrogen atom.
Nonpolar compound
Equally distributed among the atoms in a compound
Solubility
The total amount of a solute that will go into a given quantity of a solvent at a certain temperature
Concentration
A certain amount or a substance in a given quantity of a mixture, solution or ore
Unsaturated solution
Contains less solute than a saturated solution does and is able to dissolve in an additional solute in a solution
Saturated solution
Cannot dissolve any more solute under the given quantity in a solution
Supersaturated solution
Holds more dissolved solute that is required in a solution
Molarity
The concentration of a solution in moles of dissolved solute per liter of solution.
Insoluble
Do not dissolve in water
Soluble
Dissolve in water
Dilute
Contains only a small amount of solute in a mixture
Suspension
A mixture when the particles are less or more dispersed through a gas or liquid
