Chapter 9 Flashcards
(14 cards)
Pathogens
Definition: Something that causes disease
Nonliving: Prion, Virus
Living: Bacteria, Protozoa, Fungi
Bacteria
Living, prokaryote, unicellular( one cell)
Diseases: E.coli, Tuberculosis
Virus
Nonliving, DNA or RNA, attaches to host DNA, lipid or protein coat
Diseases: Flu, Covid, HIV
Prion
Nonliving, misfolded protein, causes other proteins to unfold
Diseases: Mad-cow disease, Chronic wasting disease
Fungus
Living, Eukaryotes, multi or unicellular. doubling time of hours
Diseases: ringworm
Protozoa
Similar to bacteria can be more complex organelles.
Nonspecific (Innate) Immunity
Inborn, same defense regardless of pathogen type
Specific (Acquired) Immunity
Part is inborn, and parts develop over the course of life
1st line of defense(Immune System)
Primary and chemical barriers
examples: Saliva, skin, gastric acid, sebum( skin oil), urine defecation, vomiting
2nd Line of Defense(Immune System)
Internal cellular & chemical defense
Examples: Antimicrobial proteins, Leukocytes(WBCs), Neutrophils, Macrophages, Phagocytes, Inflammation and Fever
What are the Primary Organs of the Lymphatic system
Red Bone Marrow, Thymus Gland
What are the Secondary Organs of the Lymphatic System
Spleen and Lymph Nodes
Red Bone Marrow
Site of blood cell production More in children and it decreases with age
B cells mature in bone
Thymus Gland
Shrink with age bilobed above the heart in the thoracic activity and immature.
