Trait theory of leadership
Assumption that those who become leaders and do a good job of it poses personal qualities and traits that make them a good leader
What is leadership
An individual’s ability to influence, motivate and enable other to contribute to the success of their organization
Situational theories of leadership
Effectiveness of a leadership style is directly related to the setting
Transformational leadership
Leadership that provides followers with a new vision that installs true commitment
Research of behaviour & leadership
Two kinds of behaviour contribute to leader effectiveness
- Consideration
- Initiating structure
Consideration is
Approachability, empathy and respect a leader shows towards his employees
Initiating structure is
Degree to which a leader concentrates on a group goal attainment
What is power
The ability for one party to change the behaviour… Values of another party
6 bases of individual power are
1) legitimate power
2) reward power
3) coercive power
4) referent power
5) expert power
6) information power
Legitimate power
Higher rank manager = compliance
Reward power
Manager has something they can give you. Ie. Promotion
Coercive power
Threatening an employee with a punishment
Referent power
People respect you for something
Expert power
Knowledge that people will respect & follow
Information power
Somebody has access to resources
What at influence tactics
They are determined by ones base power and whom they are trying to influence
