Chapter 9: Cellular Respiration Flashcards
The amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of 1 gram of water 1 degree Celsius.
Calorie
A pathway that releases only a small amount of energy. If oxygen is present, it leads to two other pathways that release a great deal of energy. If oxygen is not present, it is followed by a different pathway.
Glycolysis
The process that releases energy by breaking down glucose and other food molecules in the presence of oxygen.
Cellular Respiration
Each accepts a pair of high-energy electrons. It helps to pass energy from glucose to other pathways in the cell.
NAD+
It releases energy from food molecules by producing ATP in the absence of oxygen.
Fermentation
It is said to be this because fermentation does not require oxygen.
Anaerobic
They are said to be this because the pathways of cellular respiration require oxygen.
Aerobic
It is the second stage of cellular respiration. In the presence of oxygen, pyruvic acid produced in glycolysis passes to the second stage of cellular respiration.
Krebs Cycle
It uses the high-energy electrons from the Krebs cycle to convert ADP into ATP.
