protein substances made by white blood cells in response to the presence of foreign antigens. Antibodies bind to and mark for destruction the antigens that produced them.
98
immune response
the reaction between antigen and antibody.
99
vaccine
dead or weakened antigens that stimulate white blood cells (lymphocytes) to make antibodies which then remain in the blood stream to protect against the specific antigens when encountered in the future.
100
Rh condition
a person who is Rh positive has a protein coating on hs or her red blood cells (RBCs). It is a specific antigen factor that the person is born with and is normal. People who are Rh-negative have normal RBCs as well, but their red cells lack the Rh factor antigen.
101
Hemolytic disease of the newborn (HDN) or erythroblastosis fetalis
condition that arises when mother has Rh condition and the baby doesn't and their bodies produce blood cells to fight against it. Signs are jaundice.
102
Jaundice
yellow skin pigmentation is the result of excessive RBC destruction. This produces high bilirubin (a chemical pigment) in the bloodstream which cause jaundice.
103
congenital anomaly
an irregularity in a structure or organ from birth (like webbed toes or clubbed feet) Some are hereditary.
104
Recombinant DNA technology
process of taking a gene from one organism and inserting it into the DNA of another organism
105
polymerase chain reaction (PCR)
method of producing multiple copies of a single gene
106
syndrome
group of signs or symptoms that appear together to produce a typical clinical picture of a disease or inherited abnormality
107
Reye syndrome
characterized by vomiting, swelling of the brain, increased intracranial pressure, hypoglycemia, and dysfunction of the liver. May occur in children after a viral infection that has been treated with aspirin
108
Marfan syndrome
inherited connective tissue disorder marked by a tall, thin body type with long, "spidery" fingers and toes, elongated head, and hear, blood vessel, and ophthalmic abnormalities.
109
TURP (transurethral resection of the prostate gland)
a portion of the prostate is removed with an instrument (rectoscope) passed through the urethra. It is indicated when the prostatic tissue increases and interferes with urination
110
Ultrasonography
diagnostic technique using ultrasound waves to produce an image of an organ or tissue
111
echocardiogram

112
sonogram
