What are the key events of chapter 1?

A
  • Ralph meets Piggy on the beach, they swim in a lagoon and the island seems like a magical paradise.
  • Piggy finds the conch, Ralph blows it and all the survivors gather round. The choristers arrive and Ralph is voted chief over Jack.
  • Jack, Ralph and Simon explore the island and have fun crashing rocks from height.
  • On the way back they find a wild piglet and Jack lets it get away instead of killing it.

What are the key events of chapter 2?

A
  • Ralph holds an assembly, the conch becomes a symbol of authority.
  • A small boy talks about the ‘snake-thing’. Ralph reassures him but Jack wants to hunt it.
  • Ralph says there must be fire to attract the ships; the choir rush off and make one, using Piggy’s glasses to light it, they become overexcited and start a ‘forest’ fire.
  • The snake talk boy is missing.

What are the key events of chapter 4?

A
  • Roger bullies three littleuns then watches them fight in their games.
  • Jack paints his face to go and hunt.
  • Ralph spots a ship but the hunters have let the fire go out which could have rescued them. The hunters return with a pig while Jack and Ralph argue Jack breaks one off Piggy’s glass
  • They cook and eat the pig and they start a chant “kill the pig”

What are the key events of chapter 5?

A
  • Ralph immediately calls an assembly in the darkness, trying to clarify his thoughts he wishes to think as clearly as Piggy.
  • At the meeting Ralph tries to re-establish the rules, confronts the fear about the beast, Piggy claims there is no beast, Simon suggests the beast is the boys.
  • Jack declares he and his hunters will find and kill the beast and starts a wild dance which Ralph is powerless to stop.
  • Piggy wishes for grown ups to keep the peace and order, Ralph wishes fr a sign (what to do) from the grown up world.
