Chapters 8-9 Terms Flashcards
Invariance
refers to the preservation of some aspect of a row under transposition or inversion
Palindrome
word sentence or figure that can be read the same forward and backward
Symmetrical rows
rows that cam be read forward and backward and their intervals will be exactly preserved
Combinatoriality/Combinatorial rows
rows that can produce some transposition, inversion,, retrograde, and/or retrograde inversion in which the first six pitch classes will be completely different from the first six pitch classes in the original row.
hexachordal combinatoriality
the type of combinatoriality that involves the segmentation of the row into hexachords
prime combinatoriality
a row is combinatorial with a transposition of itself
inversion combinatoriality
a row is combinatorial with an inversion of itself
retrograde combinatoriality
a row is combinatorial with a retrograde form of itself
retrograde inversion combinatoriality
a row is combinatorial with a retrograde inversion form of itself
all combinatorial hexachords
6 hexachords that feature all 4 types of combinaoriality
semi combinatorial hexachords
13 hexachords that are I-combinatorial
rotation
the row is taken in order but at a different starting note
rotational array
divide the row into two hexachords where each hexachord is independently rotated
multiserialism/total serialism/integral serialism
use of serialism in musical elements other than pitch
