Chem J Flashcards
(10 cards)
what is chromatography
ink seperated based on there solubuility
rf/retention factor
ratio between distance travelled by solvent and distance travelled by compound the higher the rf the further the distance travelled by the substance than the solvent
rf formula
distance moved by substance/distance moved by solvent
stationary phase
where particles cant move such as the filter paper
mobile phase
where particles can move like water
solvent line/solvent
maximum possible distance which is why it has to be between 0 and 1
hydrogen gas test
squeaky pop test where a burning splint is placed in a glass tube and will make a pop sound if hydrogen is present
oxygen
place a glowing splint into test tube and splint will relight if oxygen is present
carbon dioxide
place gas syringe to limewater and if it turns milky/cloudy carbon dioxide is present
chlorine
place damp litmus paper into gas. If chlorine is present, it will bleach the litmus paper white
