Chemistry F Flashcards
(11 cards)
what is electrolysis
the breaking down of an ionic compound using electricity
what is an ionic compound
an ionic compound is formed from a metal and a non metal
ion
charged particle from an atom gaining or losing electrons
metals form ions that are
positive
non metals form ions that are
negative
conditions required for electrolysis
ionic compound needs to earthier be molten or in aqeous solution so ions are free to move. This is known as an electrolyte
anode
positive electrode
cathode
negative electrode
what happens at each electrode
at the positive electrode/anode, the ion gains electrons to form an element
at the negative electrode/cathode, the ion loses electrons to form an element
rule for electrodes
if ion in anode is more reactive than oxygen than oxygen is produced. If ion in cathode is more reactive than hydrogen is produced.
extraction of alluminium
alluminium oxide is dissolved in molten cryolite reducing energy cost as molten cryolite has a lower melting point than aluminium oxide
