Chemical bonding Flashcards
(15 cards)
What are Covalent Bonds?
- Strongest type of bond
- The atoms share pairs of e- to achieve stability
- Polar = unequal sharing of pairs of electrons / no net charge
- Non-polar - equal sharing of pairs of electrons / positive net charge
What are Ionic bonds?
- 2nd strongest bond
- Electron transfer attraction of opp charges
- Two opp charged ions
- Positive ions known as cations
- Negative ions known as anions
What’s unique about Hydrogen Bonds?
- Partial charges attract/lead to bonding between molecules
- Involves a hydrogen atom located between a pair of other atoms having a pair of other atoms having a high affinity for electrons
- Weak bond
What are Hydrophilic interactions?
- Easily form a hydrogen bond with water
- Gets dissolved in water
What is Hydrophobic interactions?
- Property of substance that repels water
- Lacks affinity for water
What is an example of a Hydrogen Bond?
- DNA
Why is calcium homeostasis important?
- Calcium is the main component of bony skeleton
What does Hypercalcemia mean?
- Too much
What does Hypocalcemia mean?
- Too little
What is a glycosidic bond?
- A chemical bond that link ring-shaped sugar molecules to other molecules
What is a peptide bond?
- A chemical bond linking two consecutive amino acid monomers
How can you drink a Coke [PH 2.5] and not have it affect the pH of your bloodstream in a substantial way?
- There’s a buffer in your body that helps keep H+ constant since cola is H-10
What is the medical term for Blood being too acidic?
- Medical term for blood being too acidic is Blood acidosis
If a solution has a pH of 5, what is the H+ and OH- concentration within the solution?
- H+ concentration is 10^ -5 M
- OH- concentration is 10^-9 M
What is difference between a polar bond and non-polar bond?
- Polar bond is a covalent bond between elements that have different electronegativity
- Nonpolar bond is covalent bonds between elements that have same electronegativity
