Lipid Section Flashcards
(7 cards)
Are they polymers?
- No unlike the other three groups of biomolecules
What’s a common feature about Lipids?
- They do not easily dissolve in water, so they are mainly hydrophobic
- Nonpolar covalent bonds
What are examples of lipids?
- Steroids (cortisol, testosterone and estrogen)
- Fats (triglycerides)
- Phospholipids
How are lipids used?
- Communication (hormones)
- Energy storage
- Insulation (thermal or electrical)
- Cellular structure
What is the difference between saturated and unsaturated fats?
Saturated fats - Solid don’t spoil easily
Unsaturated fats - Liquid at room temp and spoil quickly
How are phospholipids similar to triglycerides?
- Both consist of glycerol molecule bonded to fatty acids molecules
How are phospholipids different to triglycerides?
- Triglycerides have three fatty acids, while phospholipids have two fatty acids and a phosphate group
