Chemical Change Flashcards
(21 cards)
physical properties
properties that you can either observe using your five senses — seeing, hearing, touching, smelling and tasting — or measure directly
chemical properties
properties that describe how a substance combines with other substances to form new chemicals or how a substance breaks up into two or more different substances
flammability
an indicator of how easily a substance catches fire
reactivity
a measure of how likely a particular metal is to take part in a displacement reaction
toxicity
the danger to your health caused when poisonous substances combine with chemicals in your body to produce new substances and damaging effects
Melting
The process of a solid becoming liquid, usually caused by the application of heat or pressure
Evaporation
The process of a liquid becoming gas due to an increase in temperature
Condensation
The process of gas becoming liquid, due to a change in heat or pressure
Solidification
The process of a liquid becoming solid, usually occurring when a liquids temperature goes below its freezing point
Deposition
a phase transition in which gas transforms into solid without turning into a liquid
Desublimation
The process of gas turning into a solid, without becoming liquid
Sublimation
the transition from the solid phase to the gas phase without passing through an intermediate liquid phase
Solid
A solid is a state of matter characterized by particles arranged such that their shape and volume are relatively stable
Liquid
one of the states of matter. The particles in a liquid are free to flow, so while a liquid has a definite volume, it does not have a definite shape.
Gas
a state of matter consisting of particles that have neither a defined volume or defined shape.
Freezing
The process of a liquid becoming solid, usually occurring when a liquids temperature goes below its freezing point. Also known as solidification.
rusting
the corrosion of iron
corrosion
a chemical reaction that wears away a metal. Air, water or chemicals in air and water, as well as many household substances, can be corrosive. Many acids and other corrosive substances are dangerous.
rust
a brown substance formed when iron reacts with oxygen and water
surface protection
coating over a metal surface to prevent corrosion
galvanising
protecting a metal by covering it with a more reactive metal that will corrode first
