Chemical Change Flashcards
(25 cards)
Physical properties
Property’s you can see, feel, smell and taste.
Chemical properties
Describes how substances combine with another substance to form a new chemical and that substances can be broken down to two or more substances.
Flammability
An indicator of how easily a substance catches fire.
Reactivity
A measure of how likely a particular metal is to take part in a displacement reaction.
Toxicity
Substances that are poisonous and is a danger to a person’s health.
Solid
A substance that takes a shape and is firm.
Liquid
A substance that takes a shape of a container in which it is kept.
Gas
A substance that spreads out and will not stay in a container unless there is a lid.
Melting
A substance that has become a liquid caused by heating.
Evaporation
Occrus in liquid to create gas particles.
Condensation
When gas forms into a liquid (the reverse of
evaporation).
Freezing
A substance that turns in to a solid caused by a cold temperature ( also known as solidification).
Sublimation
The process where a solid completely changes its state to a Gas.
Deposition
The process where a gas completely changes its state to a solid (also known as desublimation).
Reaction rate
The speed at which a reaction takes place.
Catalyst
The chemical that helps to start or speed up a chemical reaction.
Rusting
The corrosion of iron
Corrosion
A chemical reaction that wears away a metal.
Rust
A brown substance formed when iron reacts with oxygen and water
Surface protection
Coating over a metal surface to prevent corrosion
Galvanising
Protecting a metal by covering it with a more reactive metal that will corrode first
Burning
Combining a substance with oxygen in a flame.
Oxidation
A chemical reaction involving the loss of electrons by a substance
Fossil Fuel
Substance, such as coal, oil and natural gas, that has formed from the remains of ancient organisms.
