Chemical Reactions Flashcards
(28 cards)
What is the difference between a physical change and a chemical reaction?
A chemical reaction is usually not reversible. A new chemical is usually formed. With a physical change no new chemical is formed and is usually reversible.
Where does respiration primarily occur in the body?
In the mitochondria
Mitochondria are known as the powerhouse of the cell.
What are the two different types of respiration?
Aerobic and Anaerobic
Each type has distinct processes and energy outputs.
When does aerobic respiration occur?
In the presence of oxygen
Aerobic respiration is more common than anaerobic respiration.
What is anaerobic respiration?
Respiration that occurs when the body is lacking oxygen
This type of respiration happens less frequently.
Which type of respiration releases less energy and is faster?
Anaerobic respiration
It is less efficient compared to aerobic respiration.
What is the equation for aerobic respiration?
Glucose + Oxygen ➡️ CO2 + Water
This equation shows the reactants and products of aerobic respiration.
What happens to CO2 produced in aerobic respiration?
It is breathed out of the body
CO2 is a waste product of aerobic respiration.
What is the equation for anaerobic respiration?
Glucose ➡️ Lactic acid
This equation indicates the byproduct of anaerobic respiration in muscle cells.
When might anaerobic respiration occur?
During intense exercise
Muscle cells may switch to anaerobic respiration when oxygen is scarce.
What is produced in anaerobic respiration in humans
Lactic acid
What needs to be missing in order for anaerobic respiration to occur
Oxygen
What is combustion
The chemical process of burning
What is needed in order for combustion to occur
Methane, heat, oxygen
What is the chemical formula for combustion?
Methane+Oxygen➡️Carbon dioxide+water
What happens to the water produced during the chemical process of combustion?
It rises as water vapour
What is fermentation?
It is a anaerobic respiration which occurs in yeast (and some other animals)
What is the chemical formula for fermentation?
Glucose➡️ethanol+carbon dioxide
Name two ways fermentation in yeast is used by humans
To make bread and also alcoholic drinks.
Suggest a method we can use to test for carbon dioxide
Limewater- because it bubbles when in contact with carbon dioxide
Explain the concept of the conservation of mass
Whenever a physical or chemical change occurs the mass of the chemicals before is the same as the mass of the chemicals after
What occurs if we leave our food for too long?
Rotting occurs due to the action of tiny microbes in the environment
This process is a natural phenomenon that can spoil food and other organic materials.
List ways to reduce rotting.
- Cooking
- Freezing
- Vacuum packing (airtight container)
- Salting
- Pickling
- Preservatives
- Dehydrating (drying out)
These methods help preserve food and extend its shelf life.
What is rotting in the context of the natural world?
Rotting is a fundamental process to recycle dead matter in materials
This process contributes to nutrient cycling in ecosystems.
