Photosynthesis Flashcards
(45 cards)
A simple illustration representing the basic feeding relationships between organisms in a habitat
Food chain
When are food webs used?
Food webs are to represent a more complex food relationship: where most organisms eat more than one animal.
A food chain diagram that includes the number of organisms
Pyramids of a number
True or false in a food chain only some of the energy is passed onto the consumer
True
What are identification keys used for?
Identification keys are used to recognise living organisms by their key characteristics
What are the 5 main types of bug sampling?
Using pooters- used to catch small insects
Pitfall traps-traps designed to capture small insects
Sweep nets- designed to catch flying insects
Kick sampling- nets that disturb the bank of flowing water to catch bugs
Tree beating- used to shake the tree to catch bugs clung to it
What is photosynthesis?
A chemical reaction which occurs in the chloroplasts of a plant which allows a plant to create its own food.
What is the chemical formula for photosynthesis?
CO2+Water➡️Oxygen+Glucose
What factors affect photosynthesis?
Light levels, Watering,Temp,CO2 levels.
What is a test for chlorophyll
You add a leaf to a test tube filled with ethanol
You then boil the test tube until you see it bubble then you remove the leaf and the ethanol should be green.
What is the test for starch (glucose)
Iodine
How do you know if a leaf has starch with iodine
It turns black or blue
How do you know if a leaf has chlorophyll
The ethanol turns green
Photosynthesis is a process which works in the oposite way to ___
Aerobic respiration
What does a plant need in order to photosynthesise instead of respire?
Light, so it needs to take place in the day.
True or false a plant will also choose to respire instead of phontosynthesise during day or night
True
Explain the function of the Cuticle
The cuticle is a thin waxy layer which covers the leaves, stem and other parts of the plant. It acts as a barrior which prevents water from evaporating out of the plant
What is the paliside mesophyll for in a plant?
Palisade cells are leaf cells that are packed with chloroplasts and they sit right under the surface of a leaf, in order for the chlorophyll inside the chloroplasts to absorb as much sunlight as possible in order to photosynthesise.
What part of a plant cell does photosynthesis occur in and why?
Photosynthesis occurs in the chloroplasts of a cell as these are packed with chlorophyll which absorbs light to help photosynthesis
What is the function of the spongy mesophyll in a leaf of a plant?
it helps the plant exchange gases ( oxygen gets kiced out and c02 comes in) It does this by acting like a sponge to make it easier for gases to move around
What is the function of the stoma?
The stoma or stomata for plural are located at the bottom of the leaf in the lower epidermis, they open and close to let co2 in and oxygen out in the process of gas exchange.
are the stomata present in the top or bottom of the leaf?
bottom
Where are the stomata located?
In the lower epidermis of a leaf
(so at the bottom of the leaf)
Where is the upper epidermis located in a leaf?
In the top of the leaf just under the cuticle
