Elements,Compounds and Mixtures Flashcards
(14 cards)
How can we separate a liquid from a mixture?
Use distilation
Describe the process of distillation
Place a beaker over a bunsen burner then put a boiling tube from it to a separate test tube. The liquid will evaporate and then condense and collect in the condenser. It will then flow down into the test tube.
When will filtration be used?
To separate a liquid from an insoluble solid
When would we use evaporation?
To seperate a DISSOLVED solid from a liquid.
What is chromatography used to do?
A technique used to separate a mixture of soluble substances
These are often coloured substances.
What are chromatograms?
the peice of paper showing the results after chromatography
What does it mean if a substance has two spots on a chromatogram?
It is impure and consists of at least two diferent components
What is a pigment?
A coloured substance
What is a compound?
A substance which consists of two or more elements chemically bonded together
Is carbon dioxide an element compound or mixture?
A compound wich consists if oxygen and carbon bonded together
What is an element?
An element is a substance made of only one type of atom.
What is a mixture?
Different substances physically close together but not chemically bonded
What is copper+sulphur+oxygen
Copper sulphate
What is sodium+carbon+oxygen
Sodium carbonate
