Chemical Science Test 2016 Flashcards
(19 cards)
What is an atom?
The smallest particle of a chemical that can exist
What is a compound?
A compound is when you have two or more different elements bonded together
What is a molecule?
When two or more atoms are bonded together, they create a molecule
What is matter?
Matter is everything around you
What is density?
The degree of compactness of a substance
What is mass?
A large body of matter that doesn’t have a definite shape
What is weight?
A body’s relative mass or quantity of matter contained by it, the heaviness of a person or thing
What is volume?
The amount of space that a substance or object occupies
What is the ‘ boiling point ‘
The temperature when a liquid boils and turns into a vapour
What is a ‘ physical change ‘
The changing of a state of a substance without out changing the chemical make up.
What is a ‘ chemical change ‘
Is a change that results in the formation of new chemical substances.
What is an element?
Is the simplest type of substance
What is plastic/ what does the word mean?
The wood plastic comes from the Greek word plastikos, high means to mould
List two advantages of plastic
. They can be easily moulded
. They are very light
List two disadvantages of plastic
. Non renewable
. Releases toxic fumes when burnt
Who was the inventor of plastic
Leo Baekeland invented plastic in 1904 by mixing two chemicals, phenol and formaldehyde
What was plastic called
Bakelite
What is the difference between thermoplastics and thermosetting plastics
Thermoplastics have long parallel chains that can slide over each other allowing plastic to bend and stretch. Thermosetting plastics have strong cross-linking bonds, locking them into a giant three dimensional structure.
What are three ways we can improve plastic waste
. Use reusable produce bags
. Return reusable containers
. Give up gum( gum had natural rubber in it but now has been replaced so we are all now chewing on plastic that could also be toxic waste)
