Chemistry Flashcards
(90 cards)
what is matter?
- anything that takes up space
- has mass
what is the atomic number
the number of protons in the nucleus
what is the atomic mass?
number of protons and neutrons.
what are isotopes?
*same number of protons
*different number of neutrons
when does the atmic radius increase?
going down each group in the peridoic table
what are molecules?
- two or more atoms combined
what are elemental molecules? (add egs)
- same element substances
O2, H2
what are compounds? (add egs)
*different element substances
H2O, CO2, 2KI, PbI2
what’s an ion?
*an unbalanced atom or molecule
what are cations and anions?
Cations - positively charged ions
Anions - Negatively charged ion
how do elements become more stable?
By gaining or losing electrons
what are chemical reactions?
- When valence electrons interact
what are the 3 types of bonding?
- ionic bonding
- covalent bonding
- metallic bonding
what is ionic bonding?
- transfer of electrons between atoms
- attraction between cations and anions
what does ionic bonding occur between? (metal/nonmetal)
metal and non-metal
what is covalent bonding?
- sharing of electrons between atoms
what does covalent bonding occur between?
non-metal, and non-metal
how are metal cations structured?
- share a sea of electrons
- move freely
what does metallic bonding occur between?
metals and metals
what does ‘sea of electrons ‘mean?
- they are good conductors of heat and electricity
- they are ductile and malleable
what are alloys?
mixtures of metal
what distrupts the metals’ layers? (makes it hard to slide over?)
the different sizes of atoms
what are reactants?
the substances that react
what are the subtances formed called?
products
