Chemistry Of Life: chapter 2 Flashcards
(17 cards)
Define atom
Smallest unit of an element, or a building block
Define molecule
Group of two or more atoms held together by a chemical bond
Define covalent bond
A chemical bond that occurs when atoms share one or more pairs of valence electrons
What is the strongest most common chemical bond?
A covalent bond
Define nutrient
Substance that is essential for maintenance of life
Define hydrophilic
Loves water
Define hydrophobic
Hates water
What is biology?
The study of life
What are multicellular organisms composed of?
More than one cell
How is the human body organized?
Organ systems, organs, cells, molecules, atoms (OOCMA)
What are the most common atoms in the human body by weight?
65% oxygen
18% carbon
10% hydrogen
3% nitrogen
4% 10 other atoms
How many atoms does the average human adult body contain?
Seven octillion atoms
What nutrients does your body need?
Carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, minerals, vitamins, WATER
What does it mean to be hydrophilic and provide an example?
The substance likes interacting with water and will dissolve in water, most biological molecules are hydrophilic
(SALT NaCl, SUGAR C6H12O6)
What does it mean to be hydrophobic and provide an example?
Hydrophobic molecules avoid interacting with water and will not dissolve in water (OIL and VINEGAR)
Examples of large complex molecules
Carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins
Example, examples of smaller molecules
Minerals, vitamins, and water
