Chemistry Terms Flashcards
(23 cards)
Atom
Smallest unit of matter. (Displays element properties)
Protons
Positive charged particals
Electrons
Negatively charged particles
Neutrons
Uncharged ( building block of atoms)
Mass number
Combined number of protons and neutrons together
Atomic number
Number of protons
Atomic weight
Average weight of all isotopes of an element
Isotope
Atoms with different number of neutrons
Chemical bond
Forces that hold together the atoms
Ions
Atom that loses or gains one or more valence electron
Ionic bond
(Atom steals electron from another atom) positive and negative ions attract to one another
Cations
Positive charges ions
Antion
Negative charges ion
Covalent bond
2 or more atoms share electrons. Stronger and more stable bond.
Nonpolar covalent bond
2 atoms share electron evenly
Polar covalent bond
Sharing of atoms are unequal. 1 atom can attract electrons more strongly than the other atom. Has a slight positive/negative charge.
Hydrogen bond
Weakest. Attraction or oppositely charges molecules rather than stealing. Causes cohesion
Molecule
2 or more atoms held together by a chemical bond
Compound
Atoms that are held together are different from one another
Solute
(Salt) substance that is dissolved in solution
Solvent
(Water) fluid where substance are dissolved in
Solution
Mixture of components.
Solute+solvent=solution
Element
Fundamental substance that can’t be broken down
o2, H, C and N
