Intro A&P Flashcards
(21 cards)
Endocrine system
Hormone producing gland. Regulates body activity by releasing hormones.
Cardiovascular system
Heart pumps blood through blood vessels- blood carries o2 and nutrients to cells/ co2 and waste away from cells and helps regulate acid/base balance/ temp/ body fluids.
(Heart, blood and blood vessels)
Lymphatic system (immunity)
Maturation of T&B cells that protects against disease cause microbes.
(Lymphatic fluids/nodes, vessels, spleen, thymus and tonsils)
Respiratory system
Transfers o2 from inhaled air to blood and co2 from blood to exhaled air. Helps regulate acid base
Digestive system
Physical and chemical breakdown of food - absorbs nutrients and eliminates waste
Urinary system
Produces/stores/eliminates urine. Regulates volume and chemical composition of blood. Maintains acid base balance. Helps regulate red blood cells
Reproductive system
Produces sperm and oocytes. Releases hormones that regulate reproduction.
Integumentary system
Protects body. Regulates body temp. Absorbs vit d. Detects sensation (touch, pain, warmth/cold). Stores fat and provides insulation.
Skeletal system
Supports/ protects body. Surface area for muscle attachment. Aids body movement. Stores minerals and lipids. Produces blood cells.
Muscular system
Body movement. Maintains posture. Produces heat.
Nervous system
Generates nerve impulses. Detects Changes in internal/external environment. (Brain, spinal cord and nerves)
Feedback system
Regulate a controlled condition in the body’s internal environment. Contains a receptor, control center and effector.
Receptor
Monitors change in a controlled condition. Sends input to control center
Control center
Receives input and sends output (nerve impulses) that should be changed.
Effector
Produces a response to effect the change
Example of feedback system
Body temp drops - brain (control center) sends nerve impulses (output) to your skeletal muscles (effector) - result is shivering - when generates heat - increases body temp
Homeostasis
Balance in body
Cranial cavity
Contains brain
Vertebral canal
Contains spinal cord and beginning of spinal nerve.
Thoracic cavity
Contains heart, lungs, thymus, esophagus and trachea
Abdominalpelvic cavity
Stomach, spleen, liver, gallbladder, small/large intestines, bladder and reproductive organs
