Chemistry- Unit 1 Flashcards
(33 cards)
What is the periodic table organised into?
Groups and periods
Where are the Alkali metals found in the periodic table?
On the far left side ( the first group)
Where are the Halogens and the Nobel gasses found in the periodic table?
They can both be found to the far right, Nobel gasses furthest away (groups 7 and 8/0)
What element has this chemical symbol - K
Potassium
Which element has this chemical symbol - Ar
Argon
How many elements are in the periodic table?
118
Where can most of the elements that are metal at room temperature be found in the periodic table?
In the centre of the table, there are the transition metals
Where can some of the non-metals be found in the periodic table?
The top right corner of the periodic table are all non-metals.
What are the only two elements that are liquid at room temperature?
Mercury and Bromine
What is meant by an element?
An element is made up of only one, and one type of atom.
What is meant by a molecule?
A molecule is at least two atoms that are chemicaly bonded together.
What is meant by a compound?
A compound is a substance that contains the atoms of two or more elements chemical joined together.
What are the 7 diatomic elements?
Bromine, Oxtgen, Fluorine, Iodine, Nitrogen, Chlorine, Hydrogen (aka BOFINCH)
What is a solution?
A solution is a mixture of two substances that are similar. Normally these two substances are called the solute and the solvent.
What is a solvent?
A solvent is a liquid that is used to dissolve a solute to create a solution.
What is a solute?
A solute is a substance that dissolves into a solvent to create a solution.
What is the difference between a physical change and a chemical reaction?
The difference is that in a chemical change, a new substance is formed, and it can often be very difficult to reverse. However, in a physical change, a new substance is not formed, but the substance may change state, and it is often fairly easy to reverse.
What are the three subatomic particles?
Protons, neutrons, and electrons.
Where is the nucleus found in an atom?
It can be found in the centre of an atom.
What particles can be found in the nucleus?
Protons and neutrons.
Why do atoms have no overall charge even though they contain charged particles?
Because the charges that the partials produce cancel each other out.
How is the number of electrons related to the group number of each main element group?
The number of electrons on the outer shell of an atom increases by one as you go through the groups.
What is the atomic number the same as?
The number of protons and electrons.
The number of protons plus the number of neutrons is equal to what number in an element?
It is equal to the mass number.
