Chemistry Unit Flashcards
(40 cards)
What is a pure substance?
Made of only one type of particle.
Example: Water (H₂O), Aluminum (Al)
What is a mixture?
Made of more than one kind of particle, not chemically combined.
Example: Salad, air
What is cohesion?
When water sticks to itself.
Example: Water droplets
What is adhesion?
When water sticks to other substances.
Example: Water on glass
What is a chemical change?
A change that results in a new substance with different properties.
Example: Burning wood
What is a physical change?
A change in form or appearance, but the substance stays the same.
Example: Melting ice
What is density?
The amount of matter in a certain space (mass ÷ volume).
Unit: g/cm³ or g/mL
What is mass?
The amount of matter in an object.
Unit: grams (g) or kilograms (kg)
What are the charges and masses of the 3 subatomic particles?
Protons: 1+, heavy
Neutrons: 0, heavy
Electrons: 1−, light
What are the two categories of pure substances?
Element: One kind of atom (e.g., Oxygen).
Compound: Two or more elements chemically combined (e.g., H₂O).
What is a homogeneous mixture?
Looks the same throughout.
Example: Milk, ketchup
What is a heterogeneous mixture?
You can see the different parts.
Example: Chocolate chip cookie, salad
Name 3 properties to tell melted ice cream from milk.
Ice cream: Pink, sweet, sticky.
Milk: White, thin liquid, lighter density.
Density formula?
D = m / V
Volume formula?
V = m / D
Mass formula?
m = D × V
Calculate the density of 50g mass and 20mL volume.
D = 50g / 20mL = 2.5 g/mL
Volume of a lead block with mass 5kg and density 55g/cm³?
V = 5000g / 55g/cm³ = 90.9 cm³
Mass of gold bar with density 19.3g/cm³ and volume 50cm³?
m = 19.3 × 50 = 965g
If a gold bar weighs twice as much, what changes?
Mass and volume increase. Density stays the same.
If an object weighs 2000g, will it float in water?
Not enough info — need volume to calculate density.
Who proposed the 4 atomic models?
Dalton: Solid sphere
Thomson: Plum pudding
Rutherford: Nucleus with electrons outside
Bohr: Electrons in energy levels
