What is Asthma?
Chronic lung disease caused by inflammation and muscle tightening around the airways
= harder to breathe
Symptoms of Asthma
minor difficulty breathing
able to talk in full sentences
able to walk or move around
may have a cough or wheeze
Asthma management?
- Sit person up
- Give 4 separate puffs of blue/grey reliever puffer (Shake, 1 puff, 4 breaths)
Step 3: Wait 4 minutes
Step 4: If breathing does not return to normal, call triple zero (000) for an ambulance
What is Diabetes?
A chronic disease when pancreas doesn’t produce enough insulin
When the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces
Symptoms of Diabetes?
need to pee a lot
be thirstier and drink more than usual
frequent urination
have blurry vision
fatigue
nausea & vomiting
excessive hunger
Management of diabetes?
Treatment - replacing the insulin and managing blood glucose levels.
- Testing blood glucose levels = how much glucose in the blood stream
- only way to know if it is getting the correct amount of insulin
- pricking finger with needle
- monitoring using wearable technology
- Glucose tablets
- Sugary drinks such as apple juice
What is epilepsy?
Nerve cell activity in the brain is disturbed, causing seizures.
Symptoms of epilepsy?
Temporary confusion
staring spell
uncontrollable jerking movements
loss of consciousness
