Circulatory and Respiratory System Flashcards
(26 cards)
What is asthma?
It is information of the Airways leading to narrowing of air passages
What triggers asthma?(2)
It is triggered by infection or exercising or allergies
What happens when you have asthma?
You you start wheezing and coughing you have shortness of breath and your chest begins to tighten
What is asbestosis?
Asbestos fibres enter the lung during inhalation. They build up and cause lungs to become stiff and unable to function
What are lung cancers?
Epithelial cells in lungs grow uncontrollably - forming a tumour
Main causes of lung cancer is…..
Smoking
What is bronchitis
Inflammation or swelling of the bronchial tubes because of bacterial or viral infections. This narrows the passage causing less oxygen entering lungs and shortness of breath
What are the three main components in the circulatory system
1) heart
2) blood vessels
3) blood cells
What are arteries
They transported blood away from the heart
What are capillaries?
Take oxygen to the cells and carbon dioxide from the cells
What are veins?
Carry blood to the heart from other parts of the body
What is your heart rate/pulse
The number of times your heart beats per minute
What are some factors that increase your heart rate(5)
1) exercise
2) fear
3) stress
4) anxiety
5) stimulant such as caffeine or cocaine
How do you measure your heart rate
Count the number of beats in 20 seconds then multiply by 3 to get your beats per minute
Or….
Count number of beats in 30 seconds then multiplied by 2 to get your beats per minute
What is high blood pressure/hypertension(2)
The force of which your blood flows through the arteries is abnormally high. As a result of less space for blood to flow
what can high blood pressure result to?
A stroke or heart failure
What causes a heart attack(4)
1) arteries narrow because of cholesterol buildup
2) blood can’t flow freely
3) blood clots block the flow of blood to heart
4) hot muscles make it damaged or die
What is a stroke?(2)
Blood flow to the brain stops
This result in death of brain cells -lack of oxygen, can be permanent and may lead to death
What is a hemorrhagic stroke
ruptured blood vessel
What is an ischemic stroke
A blocked blood vessel
How does smoking affect the circulatory system?
Produces poisonous substances which reduces ability to transport blood
How does alcohol affect the circulatory system?
It affects the transport of oxygen in blood speeding /slowing heart rate
How does high cholesterol levels affect the circulatory system
Is caused by diet high in animal fats and cholesterol buildup leading to the narrowing of arteries which can cause a heart attack
