Circulatory, lymphatic, heart Flashcards
what are portal systems?
specialised vascular channels that carry substances from one site to another, but don’t depend on central pump
layers of blood vessels
intima, media and adventitia
what is the intima made of?
lining layer of endothelium - sits on basal lamina
beneath basal lamina is a thin subendothelial layer of fibrocollagenous support tissue containing myotintimal cells
what is endothelium?
lining layer of highly specialised multifunctional flattened epithelial cells called endothelium which sits on a basal lamina
what are myointimal cells? where are they?
contractile cells with some properties of smooth muscle cells also capable of synthesising collagen and elastin and phagocytosis
important in atheroma
in fibrocollagenous support tissue in tunica intima
what is the tunica media made up of?
smooth muscle reinforced by organised layers of elastic tissue - form elastic laminae
where is the media prominent/less prominent?
prominent in arteries
indistinct in veins
non-existent in small vessels
what are elastic arteries?
arteries close to the heart, receiving full thrust of systolic pressure wave
what is the tunica adventitia made up of?
collagen
smooth muscle cells may be present, esp in veins
