Circulatory system Flashcards
(19 cards)
What is the job of the circulatory system?
-transport oxygen to cells
-remove carbon dioxide from cells
-transport nutrients and waste
-help with temp. regulation
-transport cells and antibodies from the immune system
What is blood?
-a collection of red blood cells and white blood cells
-the fluid portion is plasma
-the solid portion is cells
Red blood cells
-44% of your blood
-produced in the red bone marrow
White blood cells
-1% of your blood
-percentage increases when fighting infections
-produced in bone marrow
Platelets
-not cells
-play an important role in clotting and preventing blood loss
What are the 5 factors affecting blood pressure?
-amount of blood
-heart rate
-size of arteries
-elasticity
-viscosity of blood
What are blood vessels?
Hollow tubes that circulate your blood
What are 3 kinds of blood vessels?
Capillaries, veins, arteries
Structure of veins and arteries
-tunica intima
-tunica media
-tunica externa
Why do arteries have elastic membranes?
To stretch and absorb pressure for maintaining consistent blood flow
Why do veins have valves?
To prevent backflow
Structure of capillaries
Endothelial cells
Types of circulation
Pulmonary, systemic, coronary
Pulmonary circulation
heart - lung - heart
Systemic circulation
heart - body - heart
Coronary circulation
-blood vessels supply the heart with oxygen and nutrients and remove waste
What are the 4 chambers in the heart?
Right and left atrium, right and left ventricle
Where does blood go through the heart to get to the lungs?
Inferior/superior vena cava, right atrium, tri-cuspid valve, right ventricle, pulmonary semi-lunar valve, pulmonary artery, lungs
Where does blood go through the heart to get to the rest of the body?
Pulmonary veins, left atrium, bi-cuspid valve, left ventricle, aortic semi-lunar valve, aorta
