What are tissues?
A group cells specialized to do the same jobs
What is an organ?
2+ tissues creating a structure that performs the same functions
What is an organ system?
2+ organs trying to accomplish the same goal
What are the 4 categories of tissues?
Epithelial, muscle, nervous, connective
Epithelial tissue
-protects other tissues and organs
-made of cells with strong connections
What are the 3 types of epithelial tissue?
squamous, columnar, cuboidal
Muscle tissue
-cells specialized for contracting
What are the 3 types of muscle tissue?
Skeletal, smooth, cardiac
Skeletal muscle
-parallel elongated cells
Smooth muscle
-cells are long and tapered
-organized into sheets of muscle
Cardiac muscle
-branched cells
-found only in heart
Connective tissue
-protects, supports and binds other tissues
What are some types of connective tissue?
bone, fat, blood, tendons, ligaments, cartilage
Nervous tissue
-cells called neurons receive and transmit signals
What are the big 3 types of neurons?
Sensory neurons, motor neurons, interneurons
