Mitosis Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is the function of mitosis?
Produce identical cells whith the same amount of chromosomes
What is the function to healing and tissue repair in cell division?
Replace dead cells
What is the function of growth in cell division?
To increase the number of cells and not just their size because of the surface area to volume ration
Why is reproduction important in cell division?
It’s the maintenance of life
What happens to a cell during interphase?
Cell grows larger, duplicates chromosomes and prepares for mitosis
What happens to a cell during prophase? What stage of mitosis is it?
First stage - nuclear membrane disappears, nucleolus disappears, centrioles divide and migrate to opposite ends of the cell
What happens to a cell during metaphase? What stage of mitosis is it?
Second stage - chromosomes migrate to the equator of the cell
What happens to a cell during anaphase? What stage of mitosis is it?
Third stage - chromosomes move to opposite poles of the cell
What happens to a cell during telophase? What stage of mitosis is it?
Fourth stage - nuclear membrane reforms, nucleolus reforms, cells seal off (cytokinesis)
What is cytokinesis?
Division of chromosomes. “pinch” in the middle
What is meiosis?
A special cell division that creates sperm and eggs with half the usual amount of chromosomes
