Circulatory System Flashcards
(8 cards)
3 types of blood vessels and their function
- Arteries carry oxygenated blood away from the heart.
- Veins carry deoxygenated blood to the heart.
- Capillaries are tiny blood vessels that deliver oxygen and pick up carbon dioxide.
What are valves?
One-way structures that separate chambers and prevent blood from flowing backwards
Describe the pathway of the heart
deoxygenated blood enters the heart, right atrium, right ventricle, lungs, now oxygenated, left atrium, left ventricle, aorta, and the body
How does the heart get its blood?
coronary arteries
What is the purpose of blood?
Maintains the body’s pH, temperature, and distributes vital nutrients and gases
What is the septum, and how can complications be caused?
The septum is a wall of tissues that separates the left and right sides of the heart, preventing the mixing of oxygenated and deoxygenated blood.
What do you call the circuit that connects the heart and the lungs?
The pulmonary circuit
What process produced the carbon dioxide that is being dropped off at the lungs?
Cellular respiration!
