Disability def?

A

Umbrella term for IMPAIRMENTS, activity LIMITATIONS and participation RESTRICTIONS. Those refer to the NEGATIVE aspects of the interaction between an individual and his contextual factors (environment/personal factors). Disability refers to difficulties encountered in any of those areas of functioning.

Medical vs social model of disability?

A

Med: Focused on individual/disability
Social: Focused on society’s barriers/person and acknowledging that they are experts on their requirements.

A

Characterizes person as defined by their disabilities and inferior to the non-disabled

Improving therapeutic relationship for HCPs?

  • Quality life assessment, dont negatively skew
  • Dont assume that cog. deficit = cannot participate
  • Dont ignore their knowledge

A

See every individual as having their own culture. Follow their belief/desire toward their health care. Have this teaches in schools by exposing students.

  1. Language and Communication: preferred vocabulary, avoid assumptions, ensure possible communication (sign-language, yes-no questions.
  2. Patient and Family Beliefs about Health and Health Care: respect autonomy
  3. Folk / Non-Traditional Approaches: dont dismiss desire to try,
  4. Provider practices: look beyond disability
  5. Normal culture values: Understand social context. Focus on function rather than normalization
