Q

What’s the goal of mental game?

A

Not let bad hands affect my play within a session. It’s much better to be a player who plays 50% of the time his A game and 50% his B game, then to be a player who plays 90% of the time his A game and 10% of the time his E game.

Q

I open KdQd from LJ, BB calls.
Flop comes Ah6c2sr, X/c33/insta call.

Turn Qh, BB checks, i check back.

River 9c, BB insta bets 3.4BB into 6.8BB.

My action?

A

I can call sometimes or even most of the time. I still beat stuff like 54,34,87, backdoor draws etc which called the flop.

He went for a large raise(!) - the pool will think that it’s underbluffed, as my draws, such as hh, KJ etc will mostly bet the turn. So it’s very easy for him to put me on a value range
Raise 19BB.

Q

How do I know if it’s a good spot to bluff?

A

Reverse the situation: put myself in the villian’s shoes. If i had AJo, I call an open from LJ, flop is this and that, turn checked through, i bet half pot and he raises me, would I think that it’s mostly a bluff or a value? If I will think it’s mostly a value, it’s an indication that this might be a good spot to bluff.

Q

I call as BB vs LJ open with QTo.
Flop comes 6c5c5d.
I check, he quickly checked back.

Turn 7c. What do I do?

A

With 5x,overpair, and a flush draw, he bets most of the time or at least think about it. So I can take the nutted portion of his range out.

I have to ask, if villain is good enough to have a balanced checking range at this spot. Most of the pool isn’t good enough. 9/10 players will be very unbalanced here.

Bet. Bluff my entire range.

Q

LJ open, i defend BB with 86s.

Flop comes J56r, I check, LJ bets 2.5BB into 5BB. What is an option I should consider and why?

What’s the disadvantage in always calling?

A

Many players will c-bet too much. I attack those players by expanding my x/r range.

raise to 7.5BB. Villian called, and folded when the turn came 9 and we bet the pot (we can easily had 87s here and he could have folded Jx).

Many players will not be able to float me here with the correct hands (A7 QT,KQ with bd flush draw) and fold a lot , and are not able to find 3-bet bluffs on the flop -> this is a very profitable play.

Disadvantage in always calling- villain will be able to barrel me off my hand on many runouts.

Q

How do I figure out which hands should be in my expanded X/R range vs a player who c-bets too much?

A
  1. Does my hand block value? (for example, having third pair on the board is nice)
  2. Can I barrel turns often enough? For example, with a pair and bd flush and bd straight, i can barrel many turns as many turns will give me tons of equity.

Q

BvB, I open with A9dd, BB 3-bets, I call. Flop comes KQ7 with one diamond. BB bets 1/3 pot.

Is this a good hand to float?

A

Nope. Villian’s range will have AK/AQ/JTs/AJ/AT, meaning that A isn’t an out. When my A is likely to be a reverse implied odds if I hit it, just fold.

I 3-bet AhTc vs CO, he calls.
Pot 21.5BB. Effective 62.5BB.

Flop comes JdTh2h.

Should I bet or check?

A

Either is fine.

Ian thinks that check will perform much better because our opponent will have so many hands in his range that have no equity (he’s opening many hands because he’s a rec,) and we want to punish him by allowing him to make mistakes.

I can get thin value from his underpairs/weaker Tx/KQ on later streets.

I 3-bet AhTc vs CO, he calls.
Pot 21.5BB. Effective 62.5BB.

Flop comes JdTh2h. X/X
Turn 5h he instantly checks,
what should I do?

A

Once hs insta-check, his range is mostly underpairs and weaker Tx (a strong hand would at least think about leading the turn), maybe AK/AQ, I want to bet for thin value, and allow him to continue with hands like AQ no hearts.

Bet 4BBs.

I 3-bet AhTc vs CO, he calls.
Pot 21.5BB. Effective 62.5BB.

Flop comes JdTh2h. X/X
Turn 5h he instantly checks,
I bet 4BB, he insta calls.

Pot 29.5BBs.

River 6s, he tanks for 6 seconds and bets 22.1BB, leaving himself with 36.5 BBs behind.

What should I do?

A

This is close to a potsize bet, which is underbluffed. It is a 3-bet pot- i think that this underbluffed. I honestly put him on strong hands like two pair plus, and fold.

Actual answer:

We manipulated his range to be very wide getting to this point. While 65/66/43 got there on the river,I should not think about “ he will have some missed draws. And yet given his action, I’m folding.”, but I should add the random factor to recs, and the fact that his range is wide. Easy call.

He had 88 no h (a hand which makes no sense as a bluff at this spot).

Q

I open KhJc,
sb (a tight reg with 18% vpip) calls.

Flop comes 533r, i c-bet 1.7BB, he snap x/r to 5.8BB.

What’s his range?
What do I do?

A

His range is 66-99,sometimes some Ax with a backdoor draw?

He will barely have nutted hands like A3s,55,33.

Why?

A tight reg will hardly call 33/55 from sb, and even if he did, he’s not going to raise it.

Ian 3-bet bluff the flop 17.1BB.

Principle is:
On these low boards, when players’ ranges are entirely protection-driven, and they don’t have their nutted part of their range, I need to be really aggressive when they try to do their protection play. This happens a lot on xxy boards all low like 663,775,442 etc.

This play is great vs a tight reg, if it’s a rec who’s never folding his 88-TT then always do it with value.

BvB, I have AJo,
flop comes 84Tr, X/X
Turn 9r X
I bet 6BB into 4BB (a rare play),
he tanks for 5 seconds and X/R me 14BBs.

What’s his range, and what should I do?

A

After flop went X/X,
and turn went X/ overbet,

I have to ask myself: How likely is it that villain will find a significant bluff X/R range?

If he had something like J5dd, it’s more likely that he bluffs this hand on the flop or turn, rather than x/r it on the turn.

On the turn, when I overbet and face a x/r, it’s value most of the time.

Call because of pot odds

A

He X/R an overbet on the turn so he has a very strong value range. It will be a disaster to bluff here.

Check back.

46BBs in the pot.

Flop comes Qs6s9s, sb tanks 5 seconds checks, LJ insta checks, it’s on us

Bet or check and why?

A

I’d bet small to get value from AA/KK or AK with one spade, PSP checked.

He thinks check is better because rather than trying to extract value, it’s better to let the villains navigate their air region of their ranges (AThh,JJ with or without s, etc) and give them a chance to make mistakes.

River 8s, and he tanks for 5 seconds and checks. What do I do?

A

He has something like QQ/TT/99/KJs/AJs that I lose to (or AQ/KQ/T9s that I do beat), I lose to too many non-flush hands that beat us and I think that he will fold on this river to an all-in most of the portion of hands that beat me, so I turn my bottom set into a bluff.

I’m all in.

Since I have the top two pair, which allows my opponent to still have Q3 and 93 as value, allows me to 3-bet more, as opposed to a hand like Q3.

pot is 39.5BB, effective behind 55BBs.

Flop comes 765r. I bet 4BBs, he raised to 13BBs. What should I do?

A

His range is sets and then im going to lose anyways, and 99-QQ.

I don’t want him to fold now or check back the turn. Min-click.

PSM: A lot of his range is air, that’s why we bet small, so he continue with his QJhh or shit like which has no equity vs our hand. Some portion of the time he’s going to raise with that range. If he has some value like worse pocket pairs, it’s all going to go in on the turn anyways (SPR<1 btw), and that’s offset by the times he has garbage anyways. So call is better.

While my hand is technically worth a jam, player overfold vs an overbet in every spot. If the player calls a jam with a Kx, a jam is the best option, but against the majority of the pool (plays that are good vs majority of the pool should be our basic strat, and then deviate if I have read vs a specific player):

I want to target his KQ/KT/K9/AK. Go close to a pot, since i think those hands will not call an all in.

Bet 28BBs.

I have 75ss on the BB SRP vs HJ, K37hhd, He c-bets small, I call. Turn Jc X he checks back fast River 4d, should I check or bet? Why?
I check. While villian can never have a strong Kx in his range, He can still have QQ/99/TT/Jx against which I value-own myself, and i have enough SDV. PSP: I advocate to massively overbluff (in game he bet 3x the pot). It might LOOK like we have a lot of SDV but we do not, I assume that HJ will pure barrel AT,T9,QT, 98 and flush draws, so basically he will barrel with a lot of the hands I beat, so his range will be condensed, something like A7s,88,99,TT,Jx,QQ at 85%+ of their range. While they can have in theory some K-low like K5s K6s, in reality pool doesn't open those hands on HJ. Pool will massively overfold, and therefore this line is printing. The pattern is: 1. My opponent will bluff worse hand than mine (so i have less sdv on the river) 2. Many natural check-backs that condenses his range 3. River that doesn't improve his range and improves my range
26
I open 98dd as sb, BB calls. Flop comes K52hhs, I c-bet, he calls. Turn 4d, what should I do and why?
I literally have no equity whatsoever and I'm oop, so I pure give up(I prefer to bluff hands with some equity like one overcard, a gutshot etc). PSP: It's easy to overbluff at certain spots. There are so many better natural better bluffs with equity, like hearts,,Ax with a heart,76s,87s, many 6x like J6s,Q6s etc - So many bluffs with equity to choose from, that I don't need to add non-equity bluffs to my bluffing range.
27
I open 98dd as sb, BB calls. Flop comes K52hhs, I c-bet, he calls. Turn 4d, I check he checks back. Pot 9BBs. River Jd, What should I do and why?
I have no SDV, I can target his Ax like ATo, or a pair lower than a J, I'd bet the river small, 3BBs. PSP bet the pot, deciding villain has too few strong hands, so a pot would be better.
28
I open 3s3c from CO,BB calls. Flop comes QT7sss, what should I do?
PSP recommends going 1/4 pot range, which makes villains' X/R value and leaves their calling range vulnerable.
29
I open 3s3c from CO,BB calls. Flop comes QT7sss, I c-bet 1/4 pot he calls. Turn 8h he checks. Pot is 6.8BB What should I do?
I don't have enough SDV, but this hand is a good candidate to turn into a bluff. I unblock his folding range. A poor bluff will be A7dd - i want to unblock his folding range. Bet 4.2BB
30
I open 3s3c from CO,BB calls. Flop comes QT7sss, I c-bet 1/4 pot he calls. Turn 8h he checks, i bet 4.2BB, he insta-calls. River 7h, pot is 15.2, i have 160BB behind, what should I do?
When figuring out if to bluff I have to ask if my hand gets a significant amount of better hands to fold. This hand unblocks JT one spade, KT,98,Q9,66 with a spade etc, many hands will fold this river. I target a weak Qx and Tx, 20.5BBs.
31
I open 3s3c from CO,BB calls. Flop comes QT7sss, I c-bet 1/4 pot he calls. Turn 8h he checks, i bet 4.2BB, he insta-calls. River 7h, pot is 15.2, i have 160BB behind, what hands would make poor bluff candidates?
8x (unless it's with a strong blocker like As)
32
LJ limps, BU overlimps, i check from BB with 4h3c. Flop comes 2h5dTd. Do I want to lead?
Nope: 1. My hand suffers from raises 2. I cooler them on A, for example if he has A8cc and turn is a A, I will get two streets of value.
33
LJ limps, BU overlimps, i check from BB with 4h3c. Flop comes 2h5dTd, BU bets, call, call. Turn 3s, X,X, BU bets 4.4BB into 8.8BB. What's his range? What should i do?
He bet half pot on this wet texture, so he doesn't have his nutted parts of his range- never a set or a straight. He can have one pair hand like KT,QT,JT/flush draws. Given that LJ didn't raise the flop either he's also capped. Multiway we do play tighter, but also other people play tighter and will give us a lot of credit for a hand, which opens the door for me to play loose and aggressive. This hand: 1.blocks value (like A4) 2. has equity vs his continue range 3. unblocks bluffs (a flush draw). Raise.
34
a tight player (18VPIP) opens from LJ, I call from sb with KJss (BB is also a very tight player and doesn't squeeze a lot, and LJ's range is strong, I don't want to play a bloated pot vs a strong range), BB folds. Flop comes ATQr, I check, he bets 2BB into 5BB,115BB effective. Should I call or raise? Why?
Only reason to call would be to balance my calling range, especially in a situation where I don't have a significant raising range. Here i don't care about balance, I have a significant raising range (could have TT,AT,AQ), he can continue with tons of strong hands which I unblock. Raise, 8.1BBs.
35

Since he tanked it wasn't a straightforward decision. He still has all his strong hands-he thought about raising the flop. He has many hands which will call a big bet on the turn, like sets, two pairs, Axdd. Bet 14.5BB.

Mostly raise - it's a wet board, we can get called by worse hands like AA/KK/AQ/flush draw/straight draw... Raise 15BB.
38
I have QTdd in the CO, HJ opens to 2.5BB, I decide to flat, BB calls. 8BB in the pot. Flop comes QcTc2s, HJ goes half pot-4BB into 8BB. 250BB deep with BB, 110 deep with HJ, I raise 15BB, he calls. Turn Jc. Villian checks. What should I do?
AK/flush draws got there. Mostly check back the turn. If I bet the turn with this hand, all of my check-back range on the turn cannot call on the river. Need to have hands in my check back range that I can defend.
39
have QTdd in the CO, HJ opens to 2.5BB, I decide to flat, BB calls. 8BB in the pot. Flop comes QcTc2s, HJ goes half pot-4BB into 8BB. 250BB deep with BB, 110 deep with HJ, I raise 15BB, he calls. Turn Jc. Villian checks. I check back. River 4s. Villian tanks for 8 seconds and bets 48.7 into 37.8. What should I do?
Not too many combos of flushes: AKcc/K9cc,lower Ax of c (AQ/AJ/AT are blocked by board)-some he won't open, lower Kxcc some of which he won't open, maybe 87cc. I don't think that AKo will overbet on the river, maybe Ac-K?. What bluffs does he have? Let's say AA and KK every time merge on the river, 12 combos. I'm not sure what else calls our bet on the flop. The fact that he tanked-overbet makes me think he has some overpair that realized it's not good, and turned it into a bluff. Call.
40
I open the sb with T3dd, flop comes J48ddc, i c-bet he snap calls, pot is 7.6BB Turn 8d, What should I do?
Villian's range: a lot of Jx like QJo,KJo, some 8x like T8,T9, and maybe some flushes. I would bet here at a high frequency, although in theory i guess that GTO can check here as well. Bet 5BB. Ian checked. Why? So much of Villain's range is drawing dead, and he has so many hands to choose from as bluffs, and he's going to massively overbluff. For example, 65o,T9o,76o,Q9o,QTo (and of course the suited versions as well),97,T7... If I bet the turn, I let him off the hook, so it's much better to put an invulnerable hand into the checking range and allow him to overbluff. Also, the hands that will call, are hands that will open the action themselves, for example Jx and 8x. So all I do by betting here is isloating myself vs his continue range and make him fold his weak hands that will overbluff turn.
41
I open the sb with T3dd, flop comes J48ddc, i c-bet he snap calls, pot is 7.6BB Turn 8d, I check, villian snap bets 3.8BB. what do I do?
What's his range? Looks a lot like Jx and 8x. I'd X/R here to 10BB. Ian called- villain has a lot of air here, that was the point of checking the turn, and we want to keep villian's air.
42
I open the sb with T3dd, flop comes J48ddc, i c-bet he snap calls, pot is 7.6BB Turn 8d I checked, villian snap bet 3.8BB, I call. Riven Ks, he tanks and bet 12BB in 15BB, what do I do?
Ian raised - getting some value from Jx and 8x. Villian snap-folded (he had air).
43
I 3-bet 7h7d vs LJ, flop comes AT4ccc, villain checks, Wha'ts the reasoning for c-betting small?
c-bet 25% pot with entire range- make him raise his strong hands- player do a bad job x/r weak hands like 66 with 6c, and bad job slow playing, so that leaves their call range weaker
44
I 3-bet 7h7d vs LJ, flop comes AT4ccc, I cbet 25% pot, he calls. Turn 2c, he checks, pot is 20.3BB, he checks, what should I do?
Villian will have a lot of Tx or Ax without a c which will fold the turn. Bet 10BB. Also, a big percentage of the pool will raise with Kc because 'I don't want him to check back the river', so I can 3x pot the river and many players will fold their range because they mostly raise the flop or turn with their K-high flush, which makes their range by the river lower flushes at best.

I open T9cc from HJ, BB calls. Flop comes 835ddd, he checks, I bet 25% pot, he calls. Turn 8s he checks, what should I do?
Check back! If I bet here T9cc it means that I bet range here. I have so many better hands with some equity to choose from, like KQo with a d, 76, etc.

I open T9cc from HJ, BB calls. Flop comes 835ddd, he checks, I bet 25% pot, he calls. Turn 8s he checks I check back. River 2d and he bets 2BB into 8BB, what should I do?
They almost never bet A/K of d for this sizing so now his cards are face up, attack this spot every time. Raise, 10.2BB.

I open 3h3c as BU vs BB, flop comes Q86r, i c-bet small, he calls. Turn T, he checks, what should I do and why?
he has pocket pairs, 6x,8x,Qx. My hand has no showdown value even against 55, so I should turn my hand into a bluff every single time - it doesn't care to get x/r-ed since it has no sdv. If i had A6 which can show down vs a weaker 6, or 55, sure i can check.

I open Qh8d from BU, BB calls. Flop comes Ts5s4h, I c-bet he snap calls. Turn 6c, Pot is 8.5BB, what should I do and why?
Barrel it pure - I have equity and at the same time i don't mind x/r. Bet pot.

I open J2ss from sb, BB calls. flop comes As4c9s I c-bet he calls. Pot 9BB. Turn is Td. Should I bet or check? Why and to what sizing?
I have the nut advantage, and I block some of his continues, like JTss,QJss etc. Bet most of the time. 50-75% pot, targeting underpairs like 77,88,55, a weak 4x, 9x. Ian bet the pot.

I open Qh8d from BU, BB calls. Flop comes Ts5s4h, I c-bet he snap calls. Turn 6c, Pot is 8.5BB, I bet 8.5BB and he snap-calls. River 9h, he checks, pot 25.5BB, What should I do?
I unblock flush draws, I bet 10BB targeting his auto-fold. Ian went for 2x pot, targeting his Tx region.

I isolate as HJ (LJ limped) for 3BB with QTss, sb makes it 7BB, I call. Pot is 16BBs. Flop comes Jh8d9d :D villain bets 8BB into 16BB,he has 59BB behind. What do I do? What would I do vs a pot-size bet?
The ranges in play are strong- he 3-bet vs an early position raise. vs half pot- I call - I want to keep his bluff in, he can make big mistakes with AK/AQ, and it's going to be a disaster letting him play well with those hands. I want him to turn top pair or a flush draw with those hands and barrel off. vs a pot-sized bet I raise small- he tells me that his range are overpairs, flush draws etc and he ain't folding. Villian had AKo and barrelled off :D

CO opens for 2BB, BU 3-bets to 6BB, i cold-4 bet to 18BB with JcJh on the sb, he calls. pot is 40BB. Flop comes 9d8c6c. What do I do? Why?
His range is pocket pairs 77-QQ,suited broadways, suited aces. My range will have a lot of hands like AQs/AKs, to balance that range I should check here a lot, and they stab a lot with their Broadways because they put me on AK.
53
CO opens for 2BB, BU 3-bets to 6BB, i cold-4 bet to 18BB with JcJh on the sb, he calls. pot is 40BB. I check, he bets 11.5 into 40BB. What do I do?
x/r - my hand is vulnerable, on A,K,Q,7,T or club it will be hard for me to defend. X/R All in.
54
I open 43hh on the BU, BB calls. Flop comes Td2s9s I c-bet he calls. Pot is 7.7BB. Turn is 3c. What do I do?
I have some sdv vs 2x, his flush draws, random two broadways etc. Check. Ian still turned the hand into a bluff, putting pressure on 44-88, and he wants to also put pressure on the 9x region. 120% pot.
55
I open 43hh on the BU, BB calls. Flop comes Td2s9s I c-bet he calls. Pot is 7.7BB. Turn is 3c, I bet 11.5BB, villian snap calls. River is Qh, Pot is 30.7BB, 85BB behind. what do I do?
Villian's range has QJ, J8,AT/KT/QT, and some missed flush draws. Ian chose to bluff, targeting the AT/KT region. 30BB. Why not a jam? Beacuse there are no hands, or very few hands, that will fold to all in but will call a 50BB bet.
56
I open AsQc from HJ, BB calls. Flop comes 4c4h2c, I c-bet small he calls. Turn 2h x/x River 8h, he bets 6.8BB into 6.8BB,what do I do?
I call, I kept his range wide on the flop, he will have plenty of missed flush draws, random broadway etc. PSP It is a rec, so I want to call because the bet small-check turn-call river is beautiful vs recs, they will have more random hands with a wide range. Call and guy had Js8d :D (so yeah, if a random J8o got here with no connection whatsoever to the board, recs will have more bluffs here than regs.) If the player was a reg, holding the Qc weights his range more towards value, since I block some flush draws like Q5cc,Qjcc etc. => Fold vs a reg.
57
I flat 88 from HJ vs LJ open (43BB stack) 6.5BB in the pot. Flop comes As8s7h. He c-bets 2.3BB into 6.5, what do I do? How do I decide between calling or raising in similar situations?
Raise small. He isn't putting more money on the turn anyways unless he has Ax, and he isn't folding to a small raise. Also, he has many non-A hands which will continue, like flush draws, JT,T9 etc. Raise 6BB. To decide between those two options of calling or raising in situations like this (when i have a nutted hand in position), I need to think about his range- what's the chance he will continue vs a raise vs the chance he will fold.
58
I 3-bet AdKh BB vs SB, flop comes TdTc3d I c-bet he calls. Turn 7c X/X River Kd, he bets 23BB into 28BB. In this situation what do i do: 1. Vs a whale 2. Vs a reg
1. Snap call , they have a wide range and my call is printing (it was a whale and he showed A9o btw) 2. I can consider turning my hand into a bluff, Targeting lower flushes and Tx which is a big part of his range. I block KT and the nut flush. To think about turning my hand into a bluff, I should always reverse the situation: What if I had T9hh and got there to the river, went for value, and villain jams? Do I snap call thinking it's a bluff? What about J9dd? Or am I thinking it's the nut flush,KK,KT/TT all day?
59
I open JdJc from KJ, sb calls. Flop comes KcTsJs. He checks, pot is 5BB. what is my flop sizing?
He has some inelastic hands like flush draws, two pair,Qx. B66%
60
I open JdJc from KJ, sb calls. Flop comes KcTsJs. He checks, pot is 5BB, I bet 3BB, he snap-calls. Pot is 11BB,53.5 effective. Turn is 10h, what do I do?
I don't want to fold his Qx, small flush draws, gutshots, small pocket pairs. Those cannot call a big bet and are drawing dead. It's a trade - I make less against Kx, but I make more against his overall range. Bet 3.6BB. Villian called and led river for an extra 14BB :) <3
61
I 3-bet K6dd as BU as LJ-rec open. He calls. Flop comes Kh8s6h. I c-bet 4.5BB he X/R to 11.9BB. Effective behind 76BB. What do I do?
He has a lot of flush draws and air. I want to keep his bluffs in. Call.
62
I 3-bet K6dd as BU as LJ-rec open. He calls. Flop comes Kh8s6h. I c-bet 4.5BB he X/R to 11.9BB, I call. Turn Ac, he bets 18.6BB into 37.2BB, effective behind is 57.4BB. What should I do and why?
Call for the same reasons I mentioned on the flop: i want to keep his air region (and his draws) in. PSP: No, go all in. He never has 66/88 with this sizing, He now has some Ax like Axhh,or AQo with one heart, and flush draws, both of which will call a jam.
63
I call AJo from BB vs LJ, Flop comes Q67r, X/B33/C Turn Ks X/he snap checks-back River 5h Pot is 7.5BB What should I do?
I'm not beating any hand, like QJ, small pocket pairs etc. He almost never has the nutted part of his range (he would mostly bet, and at least tank the turn). Bet 6BB targeting his small pocket pairs. PSP: a big part of the pool bets every time they have Kx, two pair etc. Bet with their JT/J9 and some players are good enough to turn their 65s into a bluff on the K turn. So his range on the river is face up - their entire range is an underpair, 7x up to Qx. Their range will suffer on a river like that, when we have 65,89s,43s,75,Q5. PSP overbet 21BB
