Classification Flashcards
Name the three classifications of living organisms?
- Plants
- Animals
- Microorganisms (microbes)
Name the two categories that come under the classification of plants?
- Flowering plants
- Non-flowering plants
Name the two categories that come under the classification of animals?
- Vertebrates
- Invertebrates
Name the three categories that come under the classification of microorganisms (microbes)?
- Algae
- Fungi
- Bacteria
What are the group characteristics of flowering plants?
- Have flowers.
- Produce seeds within fruits.
- Posses vascular systems to transport water and nutrients.
- Reproduce sexually through pollination or fertilization.
What are the group characteristics of non flowering plants?
- do not produce flowers or fruits.
- reproduce through spores or naked seeds.
What are the group characteristics of vertebrates?
- animals with a backbone.
- other characteristics include a skull, endoskeleton, bilateral symmetry and two pairs of appendages.
What are the group characteristics of invertebrates?
They have no backbone or the vertebral column.
What are the group characteristics of microorganisms?
Extremely small requiring magnification to be seen.
Examples of non flowering plants
Ferns
Mosses
Liveworts
Conifers
Lichens
Clubmosses
Horsetails
Examples of flowering plants
Roses
Tulips
Sunflowers
Daisies
Lilies
Examples of invertebrates
Insects such as bees, butterflies and ants.
Crustaceans such as crabs and lobsters.
Mollusks such as slugs and snails.

What are the two ways scientists classify organisms?
Morphological characteristics.
DNA and genetics.
What are the 5 groups/kingdoms used in the five kingdom method?
- Bacteria
- Single celled organism
- Plants
- Fungi
- Animals
What is the 5 kingdom methond
This uses the morphological(physical) characteristics of the organism.
What are the 3 groups used to classify organisms within the three domain classification?
- Ancient bacteria
- Bacteria
- Organisms with a nucleus.
What is the 3 domain system?
This method is used to classify DNA analysis into 3 domains. DNA analysis allows organisms to be more closely classified based on similarities in their DNA and genetics.
What system did Carolus Linnaeus create to group and name organisms?
Kingdom (biggest group)
Phylum
Class
Order
Family
Genus
Species (Smallest group)
What was the Carolus Linnaeus method for grouping/classifying?
Similar species were grouped into genus, plural genera.
Similar genera formed a class.
Similar classes made a kingdom.
This is still the basis scientists used today although there are some extra groups such as families and phylum.
