Genetic Profiling/ DNA Profiling Flashcards
1
Q
What is genetic profiling?
A
A way of analysing a sample of DNA.
2
Q
What is genetic profiling used for?
A
Used to show the similarities between two DNA samples.
3
Q
What does the genetic profiling process involve?
A
Involves cutting the DNA into short pieces which are then separated into bands. The pattern of the bands produced can be compared to show the similarity between two DNA samples.
4
Q
Is everybody’s DNA different?
A
No identical twins will have the same.
5
Q
What do we use Genetic profiling for?
A
- Criminal cases
- Paternity cases
- Discover a gene that can cause disease
- Compare DNA of different species
- Identify was victims
6
Q
What is a benefit of Genetic Profiling?
A
Identify the presence of some genes which may be associated with a particular disease.
6
Q
Name two ethical issues with Genetic profiling?
A
- DNA samples of innocent people can be kept on police records - some believe this is against human rights and raise question of ownership of DNA.
- Individuals can discover they are more likely to develop a disease, but this is not 100% certain therefore can lead to unwanted stress for the individual.
