classification Flashcards
Classification
the action or process of classifying something according to shared qualities or characteristics.
Taxonomy
the branch of science concerned with classification, especially of organisms; systematic.
Kingdom
prokaryotes, protists, fungi, plants, and animals
Phylum
a principal taxonomic category that ranks above class and below kingdom.
Class
assign or regard as belonging to a particular category
Order
he arrangement or disposition of people or things in relation to each other according to a particular sequence, pattern, or method.
Family
all the descendants of a common ancestor.
Genus
a class of things that have common characteristics and that can be divided into subordinate kinds.
Species
a group of living organisms consisting of similar individuals capable of exchanging genes or interbreeding. The species is the principal natural taxonomic unit, ranking below a genus and denoted by a Latin binomia
Animalia
the taxonomic kingdom comprising all animals
Chordata
animals possessing a notochord, a hollow dorsal nerve cord, pharyngeal slits, an endostyle, and a post-anal tail for at least some period of their life cycles
Mammalia
any vertebrate of the class Mammalia, having the body more or less covered with hair, nourishing the young with milk from the mammary glands, and, with the exception of the egg-laying monotones, giving birth to live young.
Primate
a mammal of the order Primates. In taxonomy, primates include two distinct lineages, strepsirrhines and haplorhines
Hominid
, also known as great apes[note 1] or hominids, are a taxonomic family of primates that includes seven extant species in four genera: Pongo, the Bornean and Sumatran orangutan; Gorilla, the eastern and western gorilla; Pan, the common chimpanzee and bonobo; and Homo, the human
Linnaeus
also known after his ennoblement as Carl von Linné, was a Swedish botanist, physician, and zoologist, who laid the foundations for the modern biological naming scheme of binomial nomenclature. Wikipedia
Dichotomous Key
a tool that allows the user to determine the identity of items in the natural world, such as trees, wildflowers, mammals, reptiles, rocks, and fish. Keys consist of a series of choices that lead the user to the correct name of a given item. “Dichotomous” means “divided into two parts”.
Domain
an area of territory owned or controlled by a ruler or government.
Archaebacteria
microorganisms that are similar to bacteria in size and simplicity of structure but radically different in molecular organization. They are now believed to constitute an ancient intermediate group between the bacteria and eukaryotes.
Bacteria
Bacteria constitute a large domain of prokaryotic microorganisms
Protista
any of a diverse taxonomic group and especially a kingdom of eukaryotic organisms that are unicellular and sometimes colonial or less often multicellular and that typically include the protozoans, most algae, and often some fungi
Fungi
any member of the group of eukaryotic organisms that includes unicellular microorganisms such as yeasts and molds, as well as multicellular fungi that produce familiar fruiting forms known as mushrooms. Wikipedia
Plantae
are multicellular eukaryotes of the kingdom Plantae. They form an unranked clade Viridiplantae (Latin for green plants) that includes the flowering plants, conifers and other gymnosperms, ferns, clubmosses, hornworts, liverworts, mosses and the green algae. Green plants excludes the red and brown algae, the fungi, archaea, bacteria and animals.
