What is a skill
Skills in physical activity are defined tasks that can be learned and practiced
Open skill
A skill performed in an unpredictable environment
e.g. receiving a serve in a tennis match
Closed skill
A skill performed in a predictable environment
e.g. a gymnast doing a handstand`
Basic skill
A skill that have very few sub-routines and require a relatively low level of attention to complete them
e.g. catching a ball
Complex skill
Opposite of a basic skill, they are made up of many sub-routines and require a greater amount of attention as they can be very difficult.
e.g. a backhandspring
Low organisation
A skill that can be split into sub-routines easily and each sub-routine can be practiced separately
e.g. freestyle in swimming
High organisation
A skill that is seen as a whole action which must be practiced in their entirety.
e.g. a front flip in trampolining
